It has been a long time since I have posted to this blog. A lot has happened since then. I have finished writing my dissertation, defended it, and received my Ph.D. from UMaine. I have a review of Alphonse Mouzon's Angel Face coming soon. In the meantime, there is some jazz coming on Monday at UMaine. If you are in the area, please check out the Lidral Duo. You will be glad that you did. Unfortunately, I am teaching during that time.

Welcome to the John Coltrane Memorial Concert. We hope you will take time to browse and become informed and familiar with what we have to offer. The John Coltrane Memorial Concert (JCMC) has been held annually in Boston since its inception in 1977. It is the world's oldest annual performance tribute to the musical and spiritual legacy of the great master. The JCMC was conceived andcreated by Black American musicians who deeply understood the blessings and messages that 'Trane shared through the music. Through the continued commitment of a core group of Boston based musicians and the continued interest and support of listeners, the JCMC has evolved into a major cultural event.

The purpose of the JCMC is to reflect on the rich musical and spiritual legacy of 'Trane through contemporary interpretations of his works, to inspire us all to work toward developing our full capacities as human beings, and to work for world peace.

So with that in mind, we present much of the history of the JCMC in this website. Spend some time with us.

From the moment the first notes of the Steve Cropper and Don Covay classic, "Sookie, Sookie", come blaring out of the speakers I knew that I was going to have to buckle myself in for a hell of a ride. The thrills never let up and the tempo, for the most part, is brisk with lots of groove.

The core trio are Charlie Apicella on guitar, Dave Matlock on organ, and Alan Korzin on drums. The trio is tight and really know how to lock into a groove. The bass work by Matlock is never boring and was quite impressive as it never detracted from the organ playing. Korzin ably keeps the groove moving even while the others are soloing and yet his playing is never boring. I was impressed by his variation, he never seems to be playing stock rhythms and indeed, plays his entire kit.

Charlie Apicella & Iron City have a sound that owes a great debt to the classic organ combos of the 1960's. The choice of cover songs demonstrates this predilection with tunes penned by Grant Green, ("Blues in Maude's Flat"), Dr. Lonnie Smith, ("Play It Back"), and Lou Donaldson, ("Caracas"). That is not to say that this band is purely retro or unoriginal, the band even take a stab at Michael Jackson's, "Billie Jean". Apicella plays with an aggression that owes as much to rock players as it does to Grant Green. At times I found myself thinking that Joe Satriani would not be out of place soloing with Apicella. There is a down-home boogie in Apicella's playing that fits both the songs here and is a modern take on jazz guitar. I found his style to be unique, but not unfamiliar. The use of violin on "Sookie, Sookie" and the Apicella original, "Sweet and Sounded" is something that I had not heard with organ before. Again, the music is definitely grounded in the aesthetic of the 1960's organ combo, but the violin had the effect of giving the songs an air of gypsy jazz. Guest saxophonist Stephen Riley must have spent many hours playing with this trio in the past, as his tone meshed perfectly with both Apicella's and Dave Matlock's organ. This gives thematic unity to the soloing and makes the transition between solos less jarring.

Sparks is a hot album and if you are a fan of the classic organ combos from days gone by or just a fan of groovy music, then by all means check out. Just be sure to keep this one away from open flames as it is most likely to ignite.

Because in today's changed economic environment we are compelled to raise the money to produce the recording ourselves (though the finished recording will be released by Cuneiform Records), we are reaching out to you, our friends and fans, to help us make this CD possible. We have reached within spitting distance of our goal – but we need to reach all of our goal in order to get any of the money. We have five days to get there or we have to give it all back – that’s the way it works. But even once we reach our goal, we are still offering the awards listed - as we actually need a little bit more than the total to cover all of our expenses, so, jump right in!

The seminal jazz composer and pianist Thelonious Monk has always been a figure who loomed above the Microscopic Septet, like a patron saint or an unhealthy obsession. Both Micros composers have been inspired by his harmony, his rhythm, his humor and his grace, and we played his music from the very inception of the band. Although we always played it at gigs, we never recorded it* until now. We have decided to write brand new arrangements and record an entire CD of Monk's tunes.

However, we need to raise the money to do so. At http://Kickstarter.com/, we offer a range "awards" for different levels of donation (all include a signed copy of the CD, and a credit in the liner notes). These range from other CDs, including a "mystery CD" of unreleased Micros-related material, out-of-print LPs, a blues written in your name, and at a higher level, we will come and perform at a party at your house. (For a really large donation, we will promise never to come and perform at a party at your house, but you probably can't afford that).

As "evidence" that this will be a really great CD, we offer audio from recent performances of some of the material, youtube links to Joel Forrester raconteuring about his relationship with Monk and the Baroness Nica von Koenigswarter and playing Monk Tunes, and promises that we will really, really not screw up again this time if you just let us out of our room.

Fred Fried and Core

Core 3.0

Grade: A-

Fred Fried is a guitarist I've admired for years. He plays with a thoughtful lyricism that gently draws the listener into his songs. I like the fact that he plays with nylon strings, which is unique in jazz as most jazz guitarists favor steel strings. Additionally, Fried takes advantage of his custom 8-string guitar, often utilizing fuller chords and different voicings than is found in typical guitar jazz, (if there is such a thing as typical).

Core 3.0 is Fried with bassist Michael Lavoie and drummer Miki Matsuki. Lavoie plays aggressively, attacking the notes while walking and unafraid to play melodically. His lyrical, swinging style complements Fried's guitar playing. Matsuki is much more subtle, coloring the songs with her high hat and saying more through her use of spaces than many drummers do while playing. Matsuki is masterful in her use of stretching and contracting time, making the songs infinitely more appealing.

Working with this trio has opened up Fried's songs. Where Fried's earlier recordings have been introspective and contemplative, Core 3.0 is more joyous and extroverted. If Fried's prior works were reminiscent of Autumn or Winter, Core 3.0 brings to mind Spring with the hope and joy of the season.

The opening song, "Leanne's Number", is dominated by rhythmic twists and turns with some fabulous soloing by Fried.
"Cloud Dancer" opens with a beautiful melody that would make for a lovely pop song. The trio fully explores the harmonic possibilities of this theme on one of the best songs of the album. The main theme to "The Things You Do" would not be out of place in a Broadway musical. This is a delightful, bittersweet parting and leaves one sorry that the recording is over--but looking forward to the next visit.

Core 3.0 is an excellent album and one of my favorites by Fried. The tone may be subdued for some fans, but the music is never boring and it is clear that the trio is immersed in the songs. This will appeal to listeners across the musical spectrum — whether they listen to Bill Evans or Leo Kottke.

Jody Sandhaus
Afterglow

Grade - A

Jody Sandhaus is a vocalist deserving of much more fanfare than she is currently receiving. Hopefully, the release of her newest album, Afterglow, will rectify this. Afterglow is a recording of eleven duets for piano and voice with pianist Pete Malinverni and is Sandhaus' strongest recording yet.

Sandhaus has a beautiful voice, managing to balance subtle vocal nuances while still maintaining her pitch. She never resorts to oversinging and lets the melody carry the heavy weight of the song. Her vocal style is ideal for this set of songs, which for the most part are melancholy, dealing with the trials of romance. I need to stress that Sandhaus is a skilled technician and is able to evoke different moods as required by the lyrics. I especially enjoyed the husky raspiness of her voice on "Love Is a Necessary Evil", a vocal quality I did not recall hearing her use on her two prior albums, I Think of You and A Fine Spring Morning.

Pete Malinverni's playing is outstanding and the interplay between these two musicians demonstrate a great amount of trust. Malinverni somehow manages to maintain a distinct style while going through stylistic changes like a musical chameleon. I love the intimacy that these two impart to the songs - an intimacy that makes Afterglow sound like it was recorded for each listener, personally.

I am also impressed by the fact that Sandhaus and Malinverni took a risk by recording songs that are lesser-known than the standard American songbook fare. While risky it makes Afterglow a fresh listening experience.

If you are already familiar with Jody Sandhaus, then purchase this album immediately, you won't be disappointed. If you have yet to hear Ms. Sandhaus, then I recommend that you sample some of the songs on Afterglow. If you do I have a feeling you will soon own this fantastic recording.

Wayne Wallace Latin Jazz Quintet
¡Bien Bien!
(Patois Records)

Grade - B+

¡Bien Bien! is the newest recording from the Wayne Wallace Latin Jazz Ensemble and is an excellent release from the trombonist, composer, arranger, and producer.Wallace leads his quintet through a set of songs that have a Latin groove and a laid back, west coast vibe. Wallace does this by relaxing the tempo, compared to NYC-based Latin jazz groups, giving the album a sense of Wallace's San Francisco hometown.

Of particular note is the fine piano playing of Murray Low. Low's aggressive attack and understanding of Latin rhythms are reminiscent of the playing of the late Hilton Ruiz. Low really propels these songs to another level. The arrangements of Wallace are spot-on, as well. I particularly enjoyed Duke's "In a Sentimental Mood" reworked as a bolero. Ellington is ripe for this type of interpretation and Wallace showed taste and restraint in arranging this song. Wallace, by no means, takes a back seat as a musician either. His solo in Eddie Harris' "Freedom Jazz Dance" is outstanding - he plays his solo and stretches and contracts the rhythm giving the song an ethereal feeling. This is no mean feat as in lesser hands the trombone can sound lumbering.

As for criticisms, I would have preferred the sound of an upright bass to a bass guitar on these tracks. On some songs it worked for me, on other's it was a distraction. I also thought that the arrangement to "Playa Negra" was a little too smooth for my tastes, reminding me of Steely Dan or 1980's-vintage Brecker Brothers. Despite this, I feel that this is Wallace's finest album to date and is a fresh take on Latin jazz.

A Quiet Thing

Lisa Sokolov, A Quiet Thing (Laughing Horse Records)

Jazz vocalists have never really been my cup of tea. I love the joy and range of Ella Fitzgerald, the pathos and blues of Billie Holiday, and the rich timbre of Joe Williams' voice. However, for my tastes, I find most jazz vocalists are either unoriginal or guiltay of oversinging. However, that being said, Lisa Sokolov is a vocalist I really dig. Her singing may not appeal to everyone, but you can't accuse her of being unoriginal.

A Quiet Thing is Sokolov's newest release and highlights her extraordinary vocal skills. When singing standards she presents the listener with something that has never been heard before. Her aim is to strip these well-known gems down to their vital essence. Often, as on Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life", she mines gold, revitalizing a song that in lesser hands would have been a luke warm rehashing of a brilliant song. At other times she misses the mark - "Ol' Man River" her vocals are at odds with the lyric, as if she were swimming against the current. The inexorable flow of the river to the see is not captured here.

The real gems on A Quiet Thing are Sokolov's compositions. Here we really get the sense of Sokolov's roots in the blues, a tangible feel for cool moist earth and the mist settling on our skin. The quirky rhythms of "Succatash" are balanced by the raw power of Sokolov's voice. At times, I hear as much Janis Joplin influence as much as any jazz chanteuse. On "She Is Standing", Sokolov is more contemplative, blending her vocals seamlessly with the accompaniment.

A Quiet Thing is a very good album that will not disappoint her current fans, and may find her some new ones as well. The programming of the songs is well-thought out, mixing the standards and originals. If you are looking for a jazz vocalist willing to put her art on the line, then look no further than A Quiet Thing.

This week I will not be hosting my show, 3 December, as my wife is out of town and my children need their daddy to tend to their needs. However, I plan on returning the following week.

Review - William Parker's Petit Oiseau

Let me start by saying that I am not an objective listener of William Parker's music. Parker's songs resonate with me like no other composer's in modern jazz. Thus, it is only fair to let you know that I was predisposed to think favorably of Petit Oiseau.

Petit Oiseau or Little Bird is the third recording from the William Parker Quartet. These four musicians are extremely familiar with each other as they all work in together in some of Parker's other projects. This familiarity results in a very easy and natural musical conversation that occurs amongst the four of them. As listeners, we get to enjoy the fruits of these conversations.

The songs often start with a groove, ably laid down by Parker and Parker's drummer of choice, Hamid Drake. There is not a more formidable rhythm section playing in jazz today. This is not hyperbole - listen to the 17+ minute opener "Groove Sweet" as this sweet of three grooves is propelled by the rock solid foundation supplied by Parker and Drake. The front line of Rob Brown on alto sax and B-flat clarinet and Lewis 'Flip' Barnes on trumpet color the songs. Both Brown and Barnes are versatile musicians, each summoning a variety of tones that are used to evoke the mood required for the song. These four musicians do all this while navigating their way through Parker's harmonically complex songs and make it seem easy.

Parker's ethos is about harmony, musically and spiritually. His music is often meditative relying on ostinato patterns that change and shift slowly, almost imperceptably. This peace, this state of awareness, is arrived at by design. Parker is a deep thinker, who like a holy man, seeks wisdom through enlightenment. The compositions are his vehicle for the journey.

Allow me to close with the words of Mr. Parker from the liner notes to Petit Oiseau. "We must eventually fly from the inside out. It is not about good music or bad music. It is ultimately about love, compassion and forgiveness."

On the show for 29 October 2008, I will be playing songs from Dom Minasi's brilliant concept album, The Vampire's Revenge, in anticipation of Halloween. The Vampire's Revenge is inspired by Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles. Minasi's compositions perfectly capture the gothic romance of Rice's novels and manage to balance the brooding subject matter with some tongue in cheek humor. The musicians include many of the brightest on the free jazz scene today; Matthew Shipp, Joe McPhee, Jason Kao Hwang, and many others. Tune in tomorrow for The Vampire's Revenge.

Today's show was a feature on William Parker, all William Parker. I was going to play "Raining on the Moon" because I thought the vocals by Leena Conquest are ideal for the music. William Parker - Tomorrow

On tomorrow's show I will be exclusively playing the music of bassist & composer William Parker. Parker has two fabulous new recordings out on AUM Fidelity, Double Sunrise over Neptune and Petit Oiseau. Double Sunrise over Neptune features a large ensemble and was composed for the Vision Festival XII in 2007. The music is very much influenced by folk musics from around the world and the highlight, for me, is the vocals of Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay. Petit Oiseau is a recording of Parker's Quartet with Lewis Barnes, Rob Brown, and Hamid Drake. The music is characteristic of Parker's Quartet, with lovely extended pieces that are harmonically challenging and always interesting. Time permitting, I will also highlight music from earlier in William Parker's career.
